Every student achieved 5 or more A to G grade including English and Maths. We will be doing further analysis over the next few weeks and will report back at the Governors’ meeting in the autumn. Thank you for your support, Brendan Hickey, Headmaster. Well done and congratulations to all involved. PAPAL VISIT There are “Flyers” at the back of church to aid our celebration of Pope Benedict’s visit to England and Scotland. There are prayers for each of the four day visits along with “interesting” food for thought! Please do take a copy. THOUGHTS FOR PPC and YOURSELVES After a lively dialogue last Saturday night it seems that to satisfy the Parish Archives and Historical Records, we should celebrate the 150th Anniversary of our church on July 26th 2011. No problem, except it will be a Tuesday; the Schools will have broken up; People will be on holiday. I’m glad the topic has been brought out of the cupboard. Maybe now we can move on and decide what to do, and when. HEALING SERVICE AT ST JOHN FISHER AND ST THOMAS MORE, CHAPEL EN LE FRITH, Thursday 9th September. 7.00 p.m. “Confessions”; 8.00 p.m. Celebration of the Eucharist (Mass). UPDATE ON HALL RENOVATIONS The re-wiring is completed and ready for new lights, which will be mounted on the walls. The lights on the ceiling will be removed since the replacement of any florescent tubes calls for the erecting of scaffolding due to “Health and Safety” ruling. However, before the new lighting is mounted the inner walls call for re-plastering, paper-lining and decoration. Hence those using the hall will be a little inconvenienced. Please be patient, all should be completed within a couple of weeks. The whole project will cost something in the region of £10,000. We already have a donation of £3,000, and many thanks to your consistent weekly generosity we will have no difficulty in providing the balance. Along with others, I would love to do something with the flooring, but because of the various users of the hall it is difficult to know just what to do. The regular use of the hall makes it difficult to find space-time to do anything major. We will just have to wait and see. PAPAL VISIT INTERNET RADIO STATION BROADCASTING 14TH – 20TH SEPTEMBER www.heartgivesuntoheart.co.uk Listen to this Catholic radio station broadcasting between 7am – midnight, Tuesday 14th to Monday 20th September 2010 to cover the Pope’s visit. The full schedule of programmes will be available on the website nearer to the Visit. There are also competitions for music makers and photo/videos and you can vote for your favourite hymn. 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF OUR CHURCH (2012) Many thanks to our first volunteer to secondment to Our Parish Pastoral Council. We do need others with ideas and also practical experience. Could it be you? Please do consider how you could participate, and volunteer. OUR COMMUNITY CENTRE The upgrading of the parish property continues with the upgrading of the electrics and new lighting in the hall of the Centre. This is being carried out before the re-decorating begins. Running costs for the Centre hold their own via donations made for use of the facilities available. It is fortunate that we do not have to pay “Small Business Rates” to the Council since the centre is used, not only by the Parish, but also by the community at large. Many groups use the centre regularly. There is Bingo twice a week which provides social evenings for men and women. There are three A/A meetings each week and one for N/A. Two weekly dog training evenings are available. Then there are various other groups, Rainbows, Brownies, Choirs, Monday Club, a sewing group, stamp collectors, jugglers, “Breath Easy” Group and the occasional sales etc. During school term there is the daily pre-school. Various parties also are celebrated. When it comes to major works like repairs and maintenance it becomes the parish responsibility since the use of the Centre is the parish outreach pastoral care of the local community. Since for the present time the parish is not called upon to support our schools financially, we have been able to look towards the parish property. I do then thank you all for your continued generous financial support to make all the necessary work possible, not forgetting the monies needed when I arrived back in 1987. We really do have much to celebrate in 2012 when we recall all that has been done over 25 years.
150TH ANNIVERSARY OF OUR CHURCH – N.B. NOT THE PARISH ITSELF - In 2012 we hope to celebrate this Anniversary. Since there is a little doubt about the building’s origin, it was decided at the last P.P.C. Meeting to calculate the date from 1987. This was the 125 years celebration. What will we really celebrate? Some will remember that I arrived on the scene in October 1987. It may be forgotten that I had to announce that the parish had a financial problem, and that 15% of the cost of serious roofing repairs had to be faced for our Schools. Our Bank Manager, at the time, arranged a loan with very generous terms. Hence the seeds of recovery were sown. I feel this too should be the root of our 2012 Celebration. Yes, we should celebrate the wonderful structural development of our Schools, along with the marvellous achievements by pupils and teachers over these 25 years. However, we must also remember the foundations laid by former pupils and teachers. How will we celebrate then? Well regretfully, not by having a big “Mass”. This would be too complicated. So we will have a Party at St Thomas More School – a “pig roast” and ”picnic”. Things to be decided and arranged:- 1 – How many will we cater for? 2 – Who will provide entertainment? 3 – Who will steward the day? 4 – Who will forward photographs and information for a memory book? 5 – Will we provide liquid refreshments – at least non-alcoholic? 6 – BIG ONE – Who will wish to be seconded to the Parish Pastoral Council to help with this organisation? MUCH HAS TO BE SORTED. CAFOD PETITION – Many thanks to all those who filled in the recent CAFOD petition calling on the new Government to honour its commitments to tackle poverty and climate change. Some 75 were sent to CAFOD – an excellent response from the parish. CAFOD are trying to get 10,000 petitions by 10/10/2010. END OF TERM – AT OUR SCHOOLS – “End of Term” Eucharists were celebrated at our Schools on Friday, 23rd of July. One “little fella” said they were happy because “We are having six weeks off!” Anyway, at each school we considered, “Who is my neighbour?” Well the obvious answer was, “Our nearest neighbours are our families.” Then we moved on to our school communities. Now the school holidays are upon us, so it is up to adults to demonstrate neighbourliness to the younger generation. We have to help them to realise that we can’t always have our own way because we want something. We have to demonstrate patience, consideration for others, generosity, in a nutshell, being fair. Our duty towards others must be considered before we demand rights for ourselves. This is the Jesus “thing”. LOVELY “THANK-YOU” CARD - To our Catechists from the “2010” group who were confirmed this year. It is at the back of church. CHURCH ROOF -adjacent to the Lady Altar, seems to have been only a minor problem. So we hope for the best! PASTORAL PARISH COUNCIL – NEWS I am delighted to announce that Dr Sandy Ochojna has accepted to be Chairperson of our P.P.C. My sincere thanks to James Piercy, who has relinquished the post due to commitments, and has served us enthusiastically for the last two years. Gratefully, he has agreed to remain on the Committee. Welcome to Aileen O’Connell, who has accepted to join the Committee, many thanks to her. Welcome back to Rob Aldous, who will be re-joining the Committee after his “Sabbatical”. Many thanks to him too.
SCHOOL CONCERTS - each School presented really brilliant performances. St Anne’s School treated us all to the musical “The Pied Piper of Hamlin”. Their moral of the story was, “To be fair”, by being “all for one, and one for all”. The singing and dancing were delightfully entertaining. One doesn’t like picking out individual performers, but I have to say that the young “Billerettes” were brilliant. I thought they were girls, but in fact they were boys. Incredible! All credit to the pupils, but admiration is much deserved by all the adults who coached them. Wonderful! St Thomas More School’s production of “Bugsy Malone” too was brilliant. I heard that pre-performance worry was over-shadowed by the hope that, “It’ll be alright on the night!” It truly was. The patience and hopes of the adults involved were truly rewarded. The music, the singing and dancing, the humour and the back-stage operations were just brilliant. “Well done” to both schools. Their performances were an ideal way of celebrating another splendid year for our schools. PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL A very busy and enthusiastic meeting took place on Thursday, 7th July. (1) Two new members are needed to fill vacated places. I have already approached two people, and am hoping they will accept. (2) The Year 2012 is deemed to be the 150th Anniversary of our church premises. A celebration is proposed. Therefore the P.P.C. is seeking to co-opt members to plan for this celebration. I’m sure I am right in saying this will NOT be a great money raising event, but rather a picnic, pig-roast, and entertainment festival in the open air. The date will be, we hope, either the last weekend in June or the first weekend in July 2012. PAPAL VISIT Information has arrived. Major details later. For now, Saturday, 18th September – Hyde Park London – Groups of 12+ invited – own transport arrangements. Sunday, 19th September – Cofton Park, Birmingham – 16 places available by organised coach. PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL AGM – 6TH JUNE It was an interesting little meeting – about 30 people came along. Maybe the Spring Holiday was a factor. James Piercy, our Chairperson gave an interesting account of the last year. Three challenging suggestions:- 1. Quote, “We can’t leave everything to the priest.” But much is done by a number of parishioners. 2. A coach should be organised for the Holy Father’s Visit. Now, who would like to go? 3. Who would join the Committee this year? No volunteers yet! Many thanks to those who organised the displays. PRIESTS’ CONFERENCE – JUNE 1st – 3rd This was a very special learning opportunity for priests. The first day was given to “church music”. Actually it seemed to be about the composing of music for big events like the beatification of Cardinal Newman when the Holy Father visits England and Scotland in September. It did eventually get round to singing in our local churches. Many priests complained that people didn’t sing in their churches. It was pointed out that people will only sing if they are happy. “Come to Buxton!” I hope I was right. Anyway, our Dean of High Peak said, in the presence of Bishop Malcolm, “Dennis, I hear your Confirmations were a triumph”. Well, there you are! The second day was given to the “leadership and authority of the priest”. First of all, authority is not akin to power. It is a responsibility which is earned and given by superiors, but just as important, by the people. Then we can talk about leadership. Leadership is by way of consensus. There has to be agreement about which way “to go”. Bishop Malcolm suggested that we have to find new ways in today’s world. We have to be a compassionate church, not a church of fear. Yes, the Word of God, presented by Jesus, is still the Way. We have to work out what is the Truth of the Church, and the Way of the Church in today’s world. United we build God’s Kingdom in today’s world, divided we hinder much, not all, progress. VISITING GROUP This Group is desperately in need of new members to visit the sick and housebound in our Parish. Visiting is generally carried out in pairs, you would not be alone. If you feel you would like to be involved, please contact Marie Lewis, Buxton 25467 for further information. Also if you know of anyone who is sick or housebound and who would like a visit please let Marie know. COLLECTION BOXES at the back of church for KAOMA and A.P.S. (Red boxes). Please, would you like to collect yours. DIOCESAN YEAR BOOKS 2010 Arrived, better late than never! Please do take ONE for EACH FAMILY - free of charge. CONFIRMATION 2010 This Celebration was just fabulous. Many thanks to our Catechists, Claire and our Choir with visiting guests, Fr John Guest and the priests who joined us. Most of all though, to the Candidates who prepared for everything with great enthusiasm. MANY THANKS To our lovely two ladies, Mary and Cathy, who appear faithfully on Wednesdays to tidy our gardens and the young man who came to do the heavy (?) work.
APPEAL FOR INFORMATION - Dear Fr Dennis, My Great Great Great Grandfather was a Francisco Anzani of Anzani’s Emporium, where I gather Catholic Mass was said before the building of the Catholic Church. I am slightly puzzled to discover that he and members of his family, including my Great Great Grandmother Isabella Marie Conolly are buried in the churchyard of the Church of John the Baptist in Buxton. By the time he died I think the Catholic Church had been built. Perhaps no churchyard at the Catholic Church? Perhaps there is someone in your congregation who knows about such matters? Perhaps there are Anzanis still living in Buxton today? With thanks in anticipation for any help you can offer at all, Caroline Kernan MA Dip Hort (Kew), 12 Main Street, Bishop Wilton, York YO42 1RX. Kernon.blyce@btinternet.com Anybody know anything? Can anybody do the research?
WELCOMING COMMITTEE Our numbers are dwindling for various reasons and we need some new members to join the rota. You need to be at Church 20 minutes before the start of the service to give out Mass sheets and welcome the people arriving. If you are interested please put your name and telephone number on the sheet at the back of church and indicate which service you are available for. Kath Cassidy.
A PLEA OF DESPERATION FROM ME A certain group within the Parish is promoting various elements which are causing distress amongst our people. There is nothing I can do in spite of my efforts. All I can say is, “refuse their literature, pamphlets and invitations.” They have the nerve to confront you. So be brave enough to say “No thank you”. WONDERFUL THINGS Many are happening in our Parish. I do feel though, that I ought to know of the planning. This may seem to be dictatorial, but it isn’t. If it goes wrong it will be my fault. Then again, I may have information that is needed.
